Monóvar/Monóver

Monóvar (Monòver) is a traditional inland town of around 12,000 people in the Vinalopó valley of Alicante province, known for its Fondillón wine and as the birthplace of the writer Azorín. With vineyards and almond groves all around and Alicante airport about 40 minutes away, it is one of the most convenient places on the Costa Blanca to buy land or a country house.

Life in Monóvar

Monóvar has a well-kept historic centre with narrow streets, a clock tower and the Ermita de Santa Bárbara on the hill above the town, which gives a fine view over the valley. The town has shops, a health centre, schools, a weekly market and a good selection of bars and restaurants, and the larger towns of Elda, Petrer and Novelda are only 10 to 15 minutes away for hospitals and shopping centres.

The town takes great pride in its writer José Martínez Ruiz, known as Azorín, whose family home is now a house-museum. It is also the home of Fondillón, a rare aged Monastrell wine with centuries of history, made by local bodegas.
